WAIMEA — The Waimea Alumni and Friends Foundation (WAFF) announced the recipients of its scholarships totaling $78,080 during a dinner in the school’s cafeteria on May 15.
“We had a record-high 52 students receiving scholarships,” said WAFF President Russ Hasegawa. “This is nearly double the amount of student recipients from last year. “
Hasegawa said there was sufficient funds raised so WAFF could also sponsor a dinner for the recipients and their families.
“We thank their parents, family, Waimea High School staff and administration, coaches, counselors, friends and community members, who provided the mentoring, guidance and support that contributed to the success of these students,” Hasegawa said.
“The WAFF Scholarship Chair Lynne Tamashiro, and committee members Janice Nitta, Brenda Denny, Jerry Nishihira, Blanche Suga and Esther Estes helped compete the scholarship process.”
Waimea High School will be celebrating its commencement festivities on Friday, starting at 6:30 p.m. on the school’s front lawn.
