The Fifth Annual Sean Sweeney Tribute Games were held Saturday, June 21 at Tony’s Welding and Fabrication Stadium at Miami Trace high School.
Sweeney was an assistant soccer coach for the Miami Trace boys soccer program for several years.
Sean passed away April 17, 2021 at 38 years of age.
The games started in the morning with the current boys team taking on the Miami Trace alumni team.
In a back and forth battle, the current boys team came out on top with a huge second half.
Following that, the high school team participated in a Shoot-a-Thon event to help raise money for the scholarship and for supplies for the coming season, and the players excelled and raised a good deal of money.
There was a boys versus girls game. The boys team just escaped with a victory with a single goal advantage.
Following this, the Big Cats took the field and played in a fun game of adults vs. kids, with the kids coming up victorious.
It was another successful year of the Sean Sweeney Tribute Game with a great crowd, yummy food from the Miami Trace Athletic Boosters, lemon-shake ups from the famous Debbie Grover, awesome music from DJ MH, and the clash of generations on the field playing the game Sean loved.
The event raised more than enough to continue the scholarship, and plans to expand eligibility to the Washington Court House girls’ soccer team are in place.
