Denfeld High School students graduating in Spring 2025 are invited to apply for scholarships of up to $12,000 for post-secondary education. Applications are being accepted at DenfeldFdn.com through Jan. 15, 2025.
This marks 70 years since a Greater Denfeld Scholarship Fund was formed by a group of Denfeld staff and alumni, with the first award in 1955 totaling $150. Today the Greater Denfeld Foundation, established in 1971, supports Denfeld students by providing awards and scholarships to assist with expenses directly related to post-secondary education. In addition, donations are made to staff to provide valuable resources to enhance students’ high school educational experiences. To date, the Greater Denfeld Foundation has awarded more than $7 million to Denfeld students.
“Denfeld High School has a long tradition of alumni going on to make a difference in the world, and the Greater Denfeld Foundation is proud to have provided scholarships that helped many of them further their education,” said Foundation Board President Gary Eckenberg . “We have 17 different scholarships to assist the next generation of leaders, and we encourage them to apply for one now.”
Several of these are one-time awards of from $1,000 to $5,000, while three others are larger, renewable scholarships. More than 40 annual grants of $3,000 per year over four years are available through the Marie V. Saltwick Scholarship, Armond Hauge Scholarship and, new this year, the Mark & Ina Myles Scholarship for Denfeld students who will attend UMD, UWS, Lake Superior College, Northwood Technical College or Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.
“Denfeld has many alumni and other supporters whose belief in higher education leads them to generously fund scholarships for our students,” added Eckenberg. “We invite anyone with similar beliefs and capacity to contact the Foundation about creating scholarships in their name, or donating to support and expand our current offerings.”
The Greater Denfeld Foundation Board of Directors is made up of alumni, educators and supporters of Duluth Denfeld High School who skillfully guide the programs of the Foundation to benefit the entire Denfeld community.
The volunteer Board members are: Kerry Anderson Garthus, Reba Copeland, Matthew Davies, Gary Eckenberg (Board President), Angelo Florestano (Treasurer), Lane Harstad (Vice President), Mark Matuseski, Heather Mutchler (Secretary), Mark Munger, Paul Tynjala, Steve Westholm and Jerry Zanko (President Emeritus).
Ex-officio Board members are: Jessica Anderson (Denfeld counselor), David Hammer (GDF Administrator), Dee Dee Harstad (GDF Administrative Secretary) and Tom Tusken (Denfeld principal).
