Douglas High graduates Alyssa Long and Jiovanna Shuman each received $2,000 scholarships from the P.E.O. Chapter AN of Carson Valley.
Long maintained a very challenging academic schedule including many honors and advanced placement courses, earning a weighted GPA of 4.5.
She plans to major in elementary education at the University of Nevada, Reno. A three-year member of the National Honors Society, Long has also been an active volunteer in both her school and community. She competed on the varsity golf team for two years and was an active member of both the French and Spanish clubs. In the community she devoted many hours at Hallelujah Toffee packing candy for charitable sales. She also works 20 hours a week at Allie and Friends, a local pre-school, supervising young children and fostering positive behavior, which is good training for her future teaching profession.
Shuman will also be attending the University Nevada, Reno, in the fall, where she plans on majoring in chemical engineering. She earned a weighted GPA of 4.6 in a very challenging schedule which included five advanced placement classes her senior year. She earned College Board National Hispanic Recognition in both 2003 and 2004 as well as winning Scholastic Gold and Silver keys. Not only does Shuman excel in the math and science disciplines, but she is also an accomplished artist, submitting her portfolio to both the College Board and the Scholastic Art Awards. Shuman has demonstrated strong leadership skills in several campus organizations including the Art Club, Spanish Club, AP Chemistry Club, and National Honors Society where she was a volunteer math tutor for elementary as well as high school students. In the community, Shuman volunteered over 30 hours at the Carson Valley Food Closet. On top of all this, Shuman worked 30 hours a week at Raleys from 2022-2023. Currently, she is employed at Topaz Lodge’s Lakeview Cafe working 30 hours a week.
P.E.O. is an international sisterhood with a mission of educating women through scholarships, grants, awards, and stewardship of Cottey College, motivating women of all ages to achieve their highest aspirations.
This year’s scholarship committee was chaired by Nancy Edmundson, with help from committee members Nancy Stephenson, Betty Chase, Cynnie Vannoy, Nancy Vilkitis, and Connie Biba.
