The Anderson County Retired Educators Association recently awarded scholarships of $200 to two new teachers at Frankston Independent School District.
ACREA is encouraging young professionals with monetary assistance for classroom supplies or personal needs during their first year of teaching.
“As retired teachers we understand how challenging the first year of teaching can be, so as an organization we wanted to show support to these new teachers,” said club member Kathy Marlowe.
The recipients of the 2024 scholarships were Frankston High School teacher Tatum Pugh and Frankston Middle School teacher Lily Cahal.
Marlowe said the applicants had to complete a detailed application and submit a 200 word essay explaining their vision and aspirations for their classroom.
According to Marlowe, Pugh, an Agriculture Science teacher, said she would like to encourage all students to become interested in agriculture education regardless of expense by adding scholarships/funds to assist any student that might want to work with livestock.
She said Cahal, an assistant band director, said she would like to start a Jazz band because she would like to see high school students be involved in the community. Cahal said she thinks a Jazz band would be a good way to accomplish this since Jazz appeals to people of all ages.
ACREA is the local chapter of the Texas Retired Teacher Association.
“The mission of the TRTA is to improve the retirement security of its members and to make a positive difference in their lives,” said Marlowe. “This advocacy is important for retirees and current educators because of the importance of a strong pension system. Also TRTA is an excellent source of information on policy issues that impact retirees and current educators during legislative sessions.”
ACREA meets at 3 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month at First Christian Church and is open to all Anderson County educators.
