PUNXSUTAWNEY – Six area women were recently awarded scholarships from the Psi chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International.
The group has supported females pursuing degrees in education since its founding in 1946. It has awarded scholarships annually to local women and have mentored their careers.
The six recipients of this year’s awards are majors in Early Childhood or have a double major which also includes Special Education. All of these women come from the local region, and all have maintained exceptional quality point averages while being active on campus and within their communities.
The women were presented their scholarships by Psi committee chairperson Becky Raybuck at the group’s Oct. 19 meeting at the Punxsutawney Country Club.
The recipients include:
• Gabrielle Dinger, a Redbank Valley High School graduate, attends Pennsylvania Western University at California. She is an active junior who is a member of Gamma Sigma Sigma, a national service organization in which she is the current president. Additionally, she holds executive positions in the honorary education society Kappa Delta Phi, and membership in Student PSEA and a volunteer peer mentor. Dinger has worked summer day-care for four years at Broad Street Kids and is a substitute teacher in ESS.
• Senior Madelyn Newcome of Brockway is finishing her education at Pennsylvania Western University at Clarion. Currently she is student teaching in kindergarten at Clarion Elementary School. Newcome has been involved on campus with a program known as Clarion Students Educating Young Children (CSEYC) serving as an officer. She belongs to the international honorary society in education Kappa Delta Pi. Newcome has been employed in day-care in her community at Laugh and Learn in Brockway.
• Another recipient studying at Clarion is Cassidy Greenleaf, who since August also has been student teaching in kindergarten at Clarion Area Elementary School. She has been involved in Kappa Delta Pi, CSEYC and Student PSEA. With the latter, Greenleaf attended PSEA Mid-Western House of Delegates where she met governmental officials and was given insight into issues and trends in the field. Greenleaf was presented the Golden Eagle Award for academic performance in the past.
• Grace Dalton will be graduating in December from PennWest Clarion University. Dalton is student teaching in West Forest Elementary School in first grade. Just as she graduated from high school summa cum laude, Dalton’s perfect 4.0 grades at the university will guarantee the same honor in December. She was given the Golden Eagle Award in the past for her academic standing. Each of her memberships in honorary education societies plus Delta Zeta Sorority has provided opportunities to build leadership skills, collaborate with educators, and interact with young children.
• Riley Presloid, a senior at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, is a Punxsutawney High School graduate. While there, she was highly involved in athletics, achieving multiple awards. Volunteering with Special Olympics furthered her career goal in education. Presently, Presloid is student teaching in kindergarten in the Purchase Line School District.
• Olivia Johnson of DuBois is a junior who attends Slippery Rock University. She has been involved in the Kids Innovation Playground, a STEM-based activity for students in K-8 grades. Johnson has had opportunities to study first-hand the various head start modules to experience varied elementary school classroom practices. She is particularly concerned about issues of safety in schools and the potential impact on young children.
