Frontier Community College has awarded three separate scholarships.
Earl Pottorff Memorial Scholars Named:
Two Frontier Community College Electrical Distribution Systems students Caleb Hardy, from Opdyke, and Jeffrey Short, from Newton, were recently awarded the Earl R. Pottorff Memorial Scholarship.
The late Earl Pottorff was born in Fairfield but built a 37-year career with Commonwealth Edison Company, the largest electric utility company in Illinois serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. Earl and his wife Lorraine settled in Fairfield after his retirement, where he lived until his passing in 2012. Lorraine established the scholarship in December 2012 to honor Earl and help others begin a career in the public utility field.

FCC Students Receive Wayne-White Scholarship:
Three Frontier Community College students were recently awarded the Wayne-White County Electrical Co-Op Scholarship in honor of Gerry Kinney. Caleb Hardy, of Opdyke, Asa Cannon, of Norris City, and Jeffrey Short of Newton were this year’s recipients, all three are currently enrolled in the Electrical Distribution Systems Program.
The Wayne-White County Electrical Co-Op Scholarship was designed specifically for EDS students at Frontier and covers the recipient’s tuition, fees, and books. This scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates passion and ambition for developing a lineman career, which is something Gerry enjoyed for 17 years.
Gerry’s career was cut short after an accident involving a 7,200-volt power line which severely burned him and forced the removal of both hands and forearms. Overcoming challenging obstacles, Gerry is now a positive influence and inspiration to many. He enjoys sharing his story with current and future linemen while reinforcing the importance of safety in the electrical field.

Rafferty Scholar Named:
Maddox McElravy of Jewett was recently awarded the Steve Rafferty Memorial Scholarship by Frontier Community College in Fairfield.
The Steve Rafferty Memorial Scholarship was established in March 2014. Rafferty served as the Lead Faculty for the Electrical Distribution Systems program at FCC from 2008 until his passing in March 2014. This scholarship is awarded exclusively to students enrolled in the FCC Electrical Distribution Systems program.
The Electrical Distribution Systems program is a one-year certificate that provides training in building, repairing, and maintaining overhead and underground electrical distribution systems.
