Omaha athletics recently announced a new contribution to its hockey program from dedicated supporters Yano and Cindy Mangiameli, who have created the Yano and Cindy Mangiameli Goalie Scholarship.
This scholarship will support the starting goalie position, a role considered by many as the backbone of any successful hockey team. The Mangiamelis, through the University of Nebraska Foundation, are funding this scholarship as part of a broader commitment to the UNO Hockey Excellence Fund.
“The goalie is one of the most important positions on the ice,” Yano Mangiameli shared. “We are proud to attach our family name to this scholarship for such a vital spot in the program. We created this named scholarship to support Maverick Hockey and invest in its future.”
Yano and Cindy Mangiameli’s connection to UNO Athletics dates back to 1997, when Omaha hockey was first established. As season ticket holders from day one, they’ve been active participants in the Blue Line Club, a fan organization dedicated to promoting the team, and have provided support for both men’s basketball and baseball. Their loyalty to Omaha sports extends even further, with Yano previously volunteering for the baseball program, contributing as a camp organizer, and offering color commentary during games.
The scholarship donation represents the Mangiamelis’ latest contribution to UNO Athletics, a generosity that wasn’t lost on Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Adrian Dowell.
“The investment to name the goalie scholarship further solidifies Yano and Cindy’s legacy with our department,” Dowell said. “I am so grateful for their friendship and, on behalf of our organization, I cannot express enough gratitude for their commitment to supporting such a critical position on the ice.”
