The Temple Education Foundation announced four new scholarships on Thursday that will be awarded to graduating seniors.
Of the four, three are named scholarships — the Turley Construction Trade Scholarship, MHH Scholarship, American Legion No. 133 Scholarship — and one is an endowed scholarship — the Stringfellow Endowed Scholarship.
“All four will be available this spring semester along with the 37 other named scholarships offered by the Temple Education Foundation,” Kathy Denton, the executive director of TEF, said in a news release.
The Turley Construction Trade Scholarship will be awarded to a student who plans to further their education in the construction trade.
“At Turley’s we believe in building more than just infrastructure, we’re committed to building the future,” BJ Little, the vice president of operations at Turley, said. “By supporting the youth through the Turley Construction Trade Scholarship, we aim to inspire the next generation of skilled professionals in construction trades, engineering, and surveying. Investing in education and workforce development is not just our way of giving back; it’s our way of ensuring the continued growth and strength of the industries that shape our communities.”
The MMH Scholarship was established in memory of Maclom Howard Hatfield — a Temple resident and Korean War veteran who died in 2016 at the age of 85.
“We did 14 years of Bible study with the juveniles at the prison in Mart,” Josie Hatfield said of her husband’s time spent ministering. “We were connected to them through a former Marine who had lost his parents at an early age, and because of his loss, his heart was opened to the underprivileged. We were blessed to be there helping those boys and we want to continue serving.”
The American Legion Post No. 133 Scholarship will be given to a student who has a parent who is active military or a veteran.
“The American Legion believes in enhancing the well-being of American veterans, their families, our military and our communities by our devotion to mutual helpfulness,” Veronica Marfil-Keyes, an American Legion Post No. 133 member and TEF board member, said. “This scholarship supports our mission by meeting the unique need of helping our community. We believe this scholarship is a way to help a young person and family in Temple.”
Temple residents Tom and Marianne Stringfellow, who have three children who are Temple High School graduates, established the endowed scholarship in their name.
“We have always had a positive view of TISD since we moved here 38 years ago,” Tom Stringfellow, who worked with Texas Instruments for 31 years, said. “We especially like the leadership Superintendent Bobby Ott is providing.”
In 2024, the Temple Education Foundation awarded $118,250 in student scholarships.
“The generosity of others is what helps TEF meet our mission of helping the students and teachers at TISD,” Denton said. “On behalf of TEF, I want to extend great gratitude to each of these individuals and organizations for allowing us a vehicle of service as we honor their loved ones through our scholarship program.”
Temple High School seniors will be able to apply for TEF scholarships from Feb. 3 to March 16.
