After Joseph Paduchowski drowned Dec. 3, 2023, while out with his friends, the White Lake teen’s family created a scholarship on what would have been his 17th birthday.
His mother, Kathleen Paduchowski, said a GoFundMe account paid for her son’s funeral with enough left over to donate to Lakeland High School, where he was a junior and a member of the school’s varsity football team.
Later, the family learned about Legacy Scholarship Funds, which manages funds for the Walled Lake Consolidated School District, Farmington Public Schools, Farmington Hills Mercy High School and Oxford High School among others.
Paduchowski said she’s poured her energy into the scholarship to do something positive after her youngest son’s death.
The Joseph Paduchowski scholarship, started on March 8, will be awarded to one or two Lakeland High School graduating seniors who best exemplify Joseph Paduchowski’s qualities: being “a friend to all.” He was known for his smile, sense of humor, and radiant personality, his family said in their scholarship statement.
Applications will open for submissions in November, she said.
People can donate online at https://wlcsd.revtrak.net/legacy-scholarships or by mail to: Legacy Scholarship Funds, Inc., 3095 S. Commerce Road, Suite C, Commerce, MI 48390. Put “Joseph Paduchowksi” in the memo section of a check or money order.
