The online registration of fresh applications and renewal for National Scholarship Portal (NSP) for National Means-cum Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) 2023 has commenced.
The last date of the application submission is November 30, 2023.
The scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Education for school students of class 9 to class 12. Under it, scholarships are awarded to meritorious students of economically weaker sections to reduce their dropout at class 8 and encourage them to continue their education at the secondary stage.
According to the Ministry, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded to selected students from class 9 each year and upon their continuation or renewal in class 10 and 12 for students studying in government, government-aided, and local body schools. The amount of the scholarship is Rs 12000 per annum.
NMMSS scholarships are disbursed directly into the bank accounts of selected students by electronic transfer through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) following DBT mode. This is a Central Sector Scheme, added the Education Ministry.
The scholarship is awarded to students whose parental income from all sources is not more than Rs 3,50,000 per annum.
Besides this, the students must have a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade in the class 8 examination to appear in the selection test for the award of scholarship. However, for SC/ST students the grades are relaxable by 5%.
After registration, the scholarship applications undergo two levels of verification on the National Scholarship Portal. The first is at the institution or school level by the Institute Nodal Officer (INO) and at second by the District Nodal Officer (DNO).
The last date for the INO verification is December 15 and the DNO verification is December 30.
