CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Over 100 students were just given the financial freedom to further their education.
The Education is Our Freedom scholarship program held their annual banquet at the Omni Hotel in downtown Corpus Christi.
The program helps students across South Texas achieve their goals of furthering education through college.
We spoke today to three-time scholarship recipient Amariss Cardona, who says this has been a life-changing opportunity.
“It’s helped me and my family significantly, especially since going out of town for college now,” Cardona said. “It’s just like relieving that stress of, you know, being away kind of worrying about ‘how are we gonna pay for this? How are we gonna figure this out?’ It’s just helped me a lot.”
Judge Joe A. Gonzalez says each recipient is given $1,000. So far, the scholarship fund has gifted over $1.5 million over the past 20 years.
