WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Diya TV) — Three Purdue University students have been named 2025 Astronaut Scholars by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF), one of the nation’s most prestigious STEM scholarships. Arjun Gupte, Ishaan Singh, and Zhiyuan Chen received the honor for their academic excellence and dedication to careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. The ASF selected them among just 74 students nationwide from 51 colleges and universities.
Each student will receive up to $15,000 in scholarship funds. In addition to financial support, the award includes access to professional mentorship, networking with astronauts and STEM leaders, and a seat at the 2025 ASF Innovators Symposium & Gala in Houston this August. Arjun Gupte is a senior majoring in computer engineering in the College of Engineering. His scholarship is sponsored by Jim Hays in memory of astronaut Gene Cernan, a Purdue alumnus and the last person to walk on the moon.
Ishaan Singh, a junior, is pursuing degrees in applied physics honors and biochemistry. He is enrolled in the College of Science and the John Martinson Honors College. His scholarship is sponsored by Marc and Sharon Hagle. Zhiyuan Chen, also a junior, is double majoring in biological engineering and biochemistry. He studies in both the College of Engineering and the College of Agriculture. His scholarship is sponsored by Dick and Kathleen Covey and the CoveyLove Legacy Fund.
The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation was founded in 1984 by the six surviving members of NASA’s Mercury 7 mission. They created the foundation to support the next generation of American innovators. While ASF has deep roots in aerospace, it supports students across all STEM fields. Since its founding, the ASF has awarded more than $10 million in scholarships to over 900 top students nationwide. These scholars often go on to successful careers in research, technology, and innovation.
The foundation selects scholars based on academic performance, research experience, and potential for leadership in STEM fields. The scholarship is one of the most competitive undergraduate awards of its kind. Purdue University has been an ASF partner since 1987. Each year, it produces top candidates who reflect the university’s excellence in science and engineering. Purdue is known for its strong ties to the space industry, including alumni like Neil Armstrong and Gene Cernan.
