The Dunbar School Alumni Association, Inc. recently awarded nine $1,000 scholarships to descendants of former students, faculty and staff of the former East Spencer school. 
The association was established in 2004 to carry on the school’s legacy and in 2008, the association began awarding scholarships to descendants of former students, faculty and staff.
“Congratulations to students as they continue to pursue their education,” the association noted in a release.
Akilah Freeman
Akilah Niara Freeman is a graduate of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. She is the daughter of Maisha Kelly Freeman of Winston-Salem. She is attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University where she is majoring in computer and electrical engineering.
Damian Brandon
Damian Andrew Brandon is a graduate of North Rowan High School and the son of Brent and Aleashia Brandon of Spencer. He is attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and majoring in biology.
Evan Holmes
Evan Kelly Holmes is a graduate of North Iredell High School and the son of Carla and David Holmes of Harmony. He is a 2025 graduate of Wilkes Community College with a degree in horticulture technology.
Jasmine French
Jasmine Neliah French is a graduate of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. She is the daughter of James Jonathan French and Nicole Walker French of Salisbury. French is attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University and majoring in economics.
Gabrielle Jumah
Gabrielle Abena Jumah is a graduate of William A. Hough High School. She is the daughter of Yaw and Regina Jumah of Davidson. She is attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University and majoring in animal science.
Joi Davis
Joi Simone Davis is a graduate of A L Brown High School. She is the daughter of Benjamin and Tonya Davis of Kannapolis. She is attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University and majoring in biology pre-med.
Logan Foster
Logan Foster is a graduate of Western Central Cabarrus High School. She is the daughter of LaWanda Blair of Concord. Foster is attending Western Carolina University where she majors in nursing.
Brandon Richmond
Brandon Kennedy Richmond is a graduate of West Rowan High School, with a bachelor’s degree in English and Christian studies, theology and philosophy from Gardner-Webb University. He is the son of Tovarest and Walillian Kennedy White, and the late Larry Richmond of Salisbury. He is currently pursuing a double masters in English and religious studies at Gardner-Webb University.
Savion Barbour
Savion Esias Barbour is a graduate of Southern High School. He is the son of William Barbour of Durham. He is attending North Carolina Central University and majoring in recreation administration.
