Belhaven University is inviting aspiring writers to apply for the chance to win a full-ride scholarship.
The university will select one incoming creative writing major to receive the Angie Thomas Writers Scholarship, which covers four years of tuition, room and board.
The Angie Thomas Writers Scholarship, honoring the New York Times best-selling author and Belhaven Class of 2011 alum, began in 2020.
Thomas, a Jackson native, is known for her young adult novels, including “The Hate U Give,” “On the Come Up,” “Concrete Rose” and “Nic Blake and the Remarkables,” among others.
In a press release announcing the call for applications, Thomas called the scholarship a “financial blessing for students,” and said she is honored that Belhaven chose to use her name.
“To know that another young writer will be given the opportunity to grow their craft at a Christ-centered environment is powerful,” Thomas said. “That’s not just good news for writing, but for the Kingdom impact it will have. I’m excited to see the talent and works that will come as a result of this scholarship.”
The scholarship application includes a creative writing portfolio, a cover letter and an essay answering a prompt.
Scholarship applications are due Nov. 14, 2025. The recipient will be announced during the week of Dec. 15.
Additional scholarships may be offered to other applicants.
Interested students can visit the Belhaven University website to learn more about the application process.
