Four Copiah-Lincoln Community College students recently received Blue Wave Show Band scholarships — Mara Norwood of Wesson; Hayden Huffman of Magee; Jarvis Wilson of Copiah Academy; and Antwone Peters of Prentiss.
Norwood received the Ralph & Dot Franklin Colette Scholarship, which was established by former Colettes during their 2000 reunion. The scholarship is presented to a deserving, returning sophomore Colette in the Co-Lin district. Dot Franklin was instrumental in establishing the Colettes in 1949-1950. Ralph Franklin was band director, and noted for devising innovative performances such as the use of props.
Huffman received the Mark Hamilton Memorial Scholarship. Hamilton was a 1979 graduate and past president of the Band and Colette Alumni Chapter. He was instrumental in the development of the Princess Ball father-daughter dance fundraiser, which has raised thousands of dollars in support of Co-Lin and the Blue Wave Show Band. Scholarship recipients must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and be a band member.
Wilson received the Clyde Wilson Band & Colette Scholarship, established to honor Clyde Wilson, a 1950 graduate who returned as a band director for 10 years. Under Wilson’s leadership, the Blue Wave Band became one of the most outstanding community college bands in the nation. A recipient must be a member of the band, auxiliary, Colette, or a manager in good standing; have completed at least one semester; and have a minimum 2.0 GPA.
Peters was the Stanley Stewart Band Scholarship recipient. The scholarship was established in 2015 to honor Stewart, who was involved with the college’s music program for more than 40 years, and for whom the auditorium in the Maggie Flowers Ewing Building is named. A recipient must meet the same requirements as for the Clyde Wilson scholarship.
