(WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ) — The creation of the David J. Steinberg and Thomas R. Bell Endowed Scholarship, will hit all the right notes at Monmouth University. It will be an eternal tribute to two men whose friendship and collaboration in Philadelphia composed one of the most enduring harmonies in American R&B/Soul music history. The purpose of this scholarship is to keep their melody alive through the voices of students.
The scholarship will support in perpetuity a promising Monmouth music student or two each year who reflects the same rhythms of integrity, artistry, and generosity that defined Steinberg and Bell’s lifelong duet—one that blended talent, trust, and mutual respect into a timeless symphony of success. Jeffrey Steinberg, David’s son, and a very close friend of Thom’s said “This endowment is their encore, a tune that will never fade. We are thrilled to be honoring dad and his lifelong friend and colleague by committing the funds to make aspiring students dreams come true”.
Leonardo Hernandez and Evan Schuett both deserving sophomores in Monmouth’s Department of Music and Theatre Arts, have been chosen as the inaugural recipients of the scholarship. They each demonstrate the same creative spark and collaborative grace that made the Steinberg/Bell partnership a chart topper for the ages. “To be part of this legacy is like being handed the final note of a song I get to finish” said Hernandez who is thankful for the financial help. Schuett added, “When I received the scholarship, I was very surprised but so grateful. For me, this scholarship means that I will be able to get closer to the specific career in the music industry that I desire”.
This announcement comes just as Thom Bell is about to be posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Musical Excellence category, on November 8, 2025, a fitting moment to honor his enduring contributions to songwriting and production. Bell’s songs —-from “La La Means I Love You, “You Make Me Feel Brand New”, “Betcha by Golly Wow”, “I’ll Be Around” to “Rubber Band Man”—continue to set the tone for soul and pop worldwide. Behind the scenes Steinberg played the role of trusted counsel who ensured Bell’s vision always hit its crescendo.
