Nov. 2 marks the anniversary of the 2016 tragic ambush and killing of Des Moines police Sgt. Anthony Beminio and Urbandale police Officer Justin Martin, while they worked the night shift.
Martin was just 24 when he died and had been with the department for one year, becoming the first Urbandale officer to die in the line of duty. The road to the police station from Douglas Avenue is named in his honor.
Tony Beminio, 38, had been with the Des Moines Police Department since 2005 and left behind a wife and three children.
For the second year in a row, a Polk County sheriff’s detective is raising money in their honor. Scholarships are set up at Beminio’s and Martin’s alma mater, Simpson College, for criminal justice students. This year, he’s donating to the Anthony Beminio Memorial Scholarship.
Jason Tart said he walked 56 miles in 24 hours, starting last night. So far, he’s raised more than $2,300 but is keeping his Venmo open for donations through Friday, Venmo at @Jtart82.
