MARION, Ark. – A Mid-South student will soon be headed east to one of the most prestigious universities in the country and he’ll have one of the country’s most exclusive scholarships in his pocket to aid him on his journey.
Coby Hayes, a senior at Marion High School, received the Gates Scholarship, according to the Marion School District.
The Gates Scholarship identifies itself as “a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for outstanding, minority, high school seniors from low-income households.”
The scholarship provides students with the full cost of attendance, including tuition, fees, room, board, books, transportation and some personal costs, not already covered by other financial aid and family contribution.
More than 53,000 people applied for the scholarship and just over one percent of those applicants received the award, according to Marion School District.
Hayes, who boasts a 4.32 GPA, will use that aid to further his education at Harvard University, one of the country’s most well-known private Ivy League universities which only accepts around three percent of applicants.
The Marion senior picks up his diploma on May 23.
