The Municipal Retirees Organization Ontario (MROO) has granted an Orillia student a $3,000 scholarship.
Max Odlozinski, an Orillia Secondary School graduate, is studying commerce at Queen's University. He says he received the scholarship through his grandmother, who is an MROO member.
Odlozinski, 19, was chosen for the scholarship because of his community involvement. At Queen's University, he is a part of the Fresh Site Consulting Club which offers free advisory and consulting services to charities.
"I've been working on a project that is helping a climate-based non-profit secure more donorship," he said. "I'm trying to help them with their advertising to reach more consumers."
Odlozinski, a second-year student at Queen’s, is an orientation leader who helps first-year students get acclimated with the campus. In high school, he was a part of the student council and Students for Change club.
"I'm really stoked to get the scholarship," he said.  "The work the MROO is doing is really great."
Odlozinski says he will use the money for tuition, buying textbooks, and living expenses. The MROO scholarship allows him to focus on school commitments and extra-curricular activities.
"I do work a part-time job over the summer," he explained. "But this is definitely a huge help for sure."
Odlozinski has taken courses in finance, history, and marketing so far during his university career.
"I'm really enjoying my program because of the wide range of opportunities and courses," he said.
With two years left to go of university, Odlozinski isn't quite sure yet what career path he will choose.
"Maybe it will be something that works with non-profits or climate change," he said. "That would be really cool."
Odlozinski thanks his family and friends for their support during his post-secondary journey.
"I'm really nothing without them," he said.
The MROO recently awarded a total of $134,000 in scholarships to 44 students in Ontario as part of the MROO Student Scholarship Program for 2023.
