Two Naperville high school students have won corporate-sponsored scholarships through the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Deetya Singhal, of Naperville, a senior at Naperville Central High School, was awarded the National Merit Bunzl USA LLC scholarship. Singhal plans to pursue a career in biomedical engineering.
Himesh Nasaka, of Bolingbrook, a senior at Neuqua Valley High School, was awarded the National Merit Sony Electronics Inc. scholarship. Nasaka plans to pursue a career in electrical engineering.
About 770 high school seniors were named winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by about 94 corporations, company foundations and other business organizations, a news release from the National Merit Scholarship Corp. said.
There are two more rounds of scholarships to be announced in the next few weeks.
Students selected as winners advanced to the finalist level in the scholarship competition and met the criteria of their scholarship sponsors. The program’s semifinalists, which were the highest-scoring program entrants of each state, represent less than 1% of the nation’s seniors.
Naper Settlement’s upcoming Naper Nights summertime concert series will feature tributes to legendary pop, rock, disco and country music artists and performances by nationally known artists A.J. Croce and Samantha Fish.
Tickets for the six shows, all of which start at 6 p.m., can be purchased at www.napersettlement.org/236/Naper-Nights-Concerts. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for ages 4 to 12.

Starting Monday and for the next five weeks, the city of Naperville will conduct its annual free curbside bulk brush collection for residents who want to get rid of unbundled branches and tree trimmings.
Collection days are the same as residents’ trash days, a news release said. The city is divided into five districts, and each cycle within a district takes one week to complete. Brush and branches should be placed at the curb by the Sunday before the collection week starts.
Pickups are scheduled for:
Branches must be between three and eight feet long and no larger than six inches in diameter, the release said. They should not be tied or bundled. Branches with thorns should be placed in a separate pile.
The city will not pick up brush piles that are badly tangled, tied or contain nails, metal, root balls or other objects. Willow whips, vines and shorter branches must be placed in bags with a yard waste sticker and left out on regular garbage collection days.
Tree trunks, roots, root balls and logs can be disposed of with regular garbage, the release said.

Naperville Park District and Naperville Little League Baseball will hold a grand opening celebration for the district’s new synthetic turf ball field at DuPage River Sports Complex at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 11.
Installation of the field at 2807 Washington St. was the result of a collaboration between the park district and Little League, officials said in a news release.
As part of the celebration, there will be ceremonial first pitches and remarks from representatives for the park district, Little League and the Chicago White Sox, a partner of the Naperville Little League. White Sox mascot Southpaw will be on hand for photos and to hand out goodies, officials said.
