A local non-profit established to honor the legacy of one New Hampshire teacher hosted its first-ever fundraiser.
On Saturday, friends, family and fellow New Hampshire teachers came together at Station 101 in Milford to honor the life of Tom Sawyer, who passed away unexpectedly earlier this year. During the all-day event, $1 of every beer sold was donated to the foundation.
Sawyer began working at Souhegan High School in 1997, spending nearly three decades teaching history and civics. Outside of the classroom, Sawyer coached wrestling, football and soccer in the Amherst and Milford communities.
Following Sawyer’s death, his family and friends started a scholarship foundation in his name with the goal of giving back to high school students in Amherst and Milford who exemplified Sawyer’s passions for education, sports and citizenship.
“Tom was just an amazing guy, and we’re here to make sure there’s some sort of legacy in a form of a scholarship,” said Rob Scully, a former Souhegan High School principal.
According to his family, the foundation has raised approximately $65,000.
