The Lebanon Valley Conservancy (TLVC) announced that Katherine Shiffer, a junior at Lebanon Valley College, has received the 2024 Richard H. and Karen R. Light Memorial Scholarship.

The Greenwood High School graduate was recommended for the $2,500 scholarship by Professor Timothy J. Peelen, who teaches in LVC’s chemistry department.
Shiffer has been involved in various environmental activities, including a summer internship at Little Buffalo State Park, where she helped children spend more time outdoors and learn to appreciate the beauty of nature.

She is also a member of the environmental science club at LVC, and serves as the founder and president of the plant club.

“I hope to use both my personal advocacy and education to succeed in a career that allows everyone to enjoy the beauty and value of the environment while at the same time making sure to protect it,” Shiffer, who plans to work as an environmental protection specialist, said in her application for the scholarship.
TLVC presented the scholarship to Shiffer at an award event they hosted during this year’s Earth Month and LVC’s Earth Days. The scholarship was designed to assist the recipient in their studies regarding environmental science
Matt Royer, Agriculture and Environmental Resource Management program director at Penn State, was the guest speaker. Royer also serves as a founder and president of the Tri-County Conewago Creek Association.
The free event was sponsored by LVC’s Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee and Biology Department, LandStudies Inc., the Light Scholarship Committee, and TLVC.
The scholarship is awarded on an annual basis by the TLVC in memory of Richard H. and Karen R. Light, two prominent local residents who made a significant impact on environmental conservation in the Lebanon Valley.
“Katherine’s desire to educate others and her drive to protect the environment were very similar to the passions the Lights held, and why we selected her for this scholarship,” said Jeanne Boltz, Karen Light’s sister and scholarship committee chair.
The application process for the 2025 scholarship will open this coming January. More information about the scholarship is available on the TLVC website.
