With trade industries facing an alarming shortage of workers, Metal Supermarkets is looking to lend a helping hand. The company has kicked off its 3rd annual trade school scholarships program, which includes four $2,500 scholarships to support young people seeking careers in the trades in Canada and the United States. Students have until June 28th to apply for this year’s scholarships.
A study commissioned by Metal Supermarkets indicates that young people are simply not aware of possible skilled trades careers, with over 62 per cent of respondents indicating they did not learn about trade school opportunities in high school, despite these programs leading to stable, essential jobs that are in demand.
“The skilled trades don’t just hold strong in an economic downturn—but they are among the rare sectors that continue to experience significant growth in an unpredictable job market,” stated Jill Quinn, executive leader at PeopleReady Skilled Trades.
To be eligible, students must be accepted into or attending a post-secondary trade school program with a semester beginning in 2024. The competition is open to citizens, permanent residents and resident aliens legally residing in Canada or the U.S. who hold a high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
