WILLIAMSBURG— The Williamsburg Arts Council, a local nonprofit organization, has announced the award of its annual art scholarships for 2024.
The Williamsburg Art Council says that awards were made to two James City County art students; first place was awarded to Mary Barrett, and second place to Sallie Brooks. A reception to announce the award of the scholarships was held on May 14, at the home of Arts Council President Carolyn Campbell.
According to a press statement, recipients were selected from among a number of applicants on the basis of their submitted artwork, their artist’s statement, their academic performance, and recommendations from their school. As stipulated in the award of the scholarships, the recipients will be pursuing further study in the field of the visual or performing arts.
Barrett, who is finishing her studies at the Williamsburg Classical Academy, will reportedly be attending Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Art in the fall, where she plans to pursue a degree in fine arts. In addition to her interest and talent in the visual arts, Barrett is also involved in music and dance. She hopes to minor in harp and continue with ballet during her time at VCU.
Brooks is a student at Walsingham Academy. In the fall, she is reportedly to be continuing her studies by attending the University of Virginia, where she is looking forward to the excellent arts program at the University. Brooks is also interested in science, and is considering a dual major in medicine and art.
The Williamsburg Arts Council awards one or more scholarships each year to promising local students planning to pursue an education in the arts. Since the Arts Council was established in 2016, it has awarded 13 scholarships. According to the Arts Council, as a nonprofit organization, it has an educational mission, which it fulfills, in part, through its annual scholarship program. It also supports arts in the community by publicizing art events and the work of local artists.
