ABILENE, Texas — A long-standing scholarship contest in the West Texas rodeo world has been canceled with no word yet as to why.
A media release from West Texas Fair & Rodeo General Manager Rochelle Johnson said, “After careful thought and much deliberation, the West Texas Fair & Rodeo has decided to no longer offer the Miss West Texas Fair & Rodeo Queen Scholarship Contest.
The West Texas Fair & Rodeo will continue to serve the organization’s mission by providing scholarships for Texas youth through other avenues of participation. The West Texas Fair & Rodeo would like to thank the titleholders for a year of dedicated service to the agricultural industry. The West Texas Fair & Rodeo would also like to thank committee members, pageant judges and sponsors, and contestant families for helping the young ladies of rodeo learn and grow.
Thank you to all who have supported the Miss West Texas Fair & Rodeo Queen Scholarship Contest; we are proud of the leaders that have emerged from this event.”
Johnson did not say why the decision was made to end the contest, but many took to social media to voice their opinions on the news.
This is a developing story. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
