The Erie Colorado Rotary Club is awarding Erie High School graduates Devyn Nabarrete and Josie Tempel with the 2024 David McChesney Scholarship for exhibited excellence in service and character.
According to a release, Nabarrete demonstrated acts of service in assisting animals in need and serving people who are injured and struggling. She was a volunteer at the Longmont Humane Society and has learned basic first aid and CPR, allowing her to train local school district janitors, school children, stay-at-home moms and professional career workers. She also volunteered and competed at Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), where she consistently took the initiative to go above and beyond to meet the event’s needs. She plans to attend Coe College in Iowa.
Tempel was active for nine years in 4-H clubs and projects and volunteered at the Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center, helping people with disabilities interact with animals in order to foster improvement in mobility and general performance, according to the release. She plans to attend California Lutheran University.
The scholarship is open to residents of Erie that are graduating seniors attending any high school, with plans to attend a university, college, post-secondary institution or the military. Service-based volunteering must be part of the student’s high school experience, and a minimum 3.0 cumulative unweighted high school GPA is required.
