Last month, 10 students from across Lawrence County heard their names called out by a King before they walked across the stage of the Lawrence County High School auditorium to receive a handshake and a scholarship from a Queen.
Each of the $1000 scholarships are awarded by the Byler Road Project, an initiative created by local restaurateurs Elayne and Marvin Jackson to help Lawrence County students more easily navigate the costs of attending college.
“You can pretty much use it for whatever you want, you can use it on gas, book, whatever. That’s what makes it so great,” Marvin Jackson said.
The money from the scholarships is raised during Moulton’s annual Mardi Gras Parade, which consists of an award ceremony at the Jackson’s restaurant for the community members who have raised the most money for the event, followed by a parade through downtown Moulton on floats the next day.
Seniors at any of the local high schools can apply for the Byler Road Initiative simply by filling out an application for the scholarship and turning it back in.
“Anyone who is a senior can apply for the scholarships, even homeschool kids who are still under the Lawrence County School System umbrella,” Jackson said. “They can pick up applications here at the Hot Spot, or at any of the local high schools.”
This year’s scholarship award ceremony was presided over by Mardi Gras King, Ronald Legg and Mardi Gras Queen, Cristi Allen.
“We always get really good feed back from students who receive the scholarships. They’re all very appreciative and some of them write us thank you letters,” Jackson said.
This year, the 10 students to receive the scholarship include: Zavier Bush, Ada Grace Calhoun, Noah Dutton, Nash Johnson, Zane Kenum, Gracie Key, Haleigh Patterson, Kaesyn Price, Zaida Sims, and Mercedez Young.
