The Weld Community Foundation awarded local students $585,310 in scholarships at the foundation’s annual scholarship reception last month.
On May 21, more than 160 scholarships went to students from Greeley, Windsor, Severance, Eaton, Fort Lupton and more Weld County school districts. Since 1997, the Weld Community Foundation has awarded more than $6 million in scholarships with the support of donors.
Cristal Berumen Alvarado, a past recipient of the Hertneky Family Scholarship and the John K. Jerome Family Scholarship from the Weld Community Foundation, served as a guest speaker at the event, which marked its 20th year. The rising senior at the University of Colorado Boulder shared the role scholarships have played in her life as a college student and the importance of finding a community in college.
The John K. Jerome Family Scholarship recipients include two Aims Community College, Hannah Ochieng and Angela Donohue. Cristal Berumen Alvarado, another Aims Community College student, received the Hertneky Family Scholarship.
Another guest speaker, Rick Jenkins, shared the story of when tragedy struck his family 17 years ago — their daughter Alison died by suicide at age 27.
Rick, the founder of Imagine Zero Weld County, and his wife, Barb, started THIRST Living Waters Fund, a suicide prevention and support ministry, in light of their tragedy. The ministry helped establish the Imagine Zero Scholarship for students pursuing a mental health career.
The Jenkins selected Giselle Sixtos from Fort Lupton High School and Joshelle Tul-Id of Northridge High School as the 2024 Imagine Zero Scholarship recipients.
Rick encouraged all the students at the scholarship reception “to continue striving for excellence in college and beyond.”
