If you’re a student whose green thumb has led you to pursue a career in horticulture or environmental studies, local horticultural groups want to give you a little boost to help you get there.
The Simcoe County chapter of the Garden Ontario will be opening applications next month for the Dr. Raymond E. Ives Horticultural Awards, which are five $1,000 scholarships for Simcoe County students who are entering or continuing post-secondary education in horticulture, environmental studies, forestry, arboriculture or a related field.
“It relates back to the importance of the natural environment to our ongoing existence. Climate change is real. It’s here. It’s not going anywhere,” said Barb Collinson, past club president of the Collingwood Garden Club and Garden Ontario director for District 16 (Simcoe County).
“We believe it’s important to support students in these particular fields.”
The Dr. Raymond E. Ives Horticultural Awards were founded in 1976 to honour Dr. Ives of Stayner, a family physician and noted local horticulturalist.
“He was quite well-known in the Stayner area, and in the horticultural community as well,” said Collinson.
Applications will be accepted between Aug. 20 and Sept. 20.
