Zoey Sue Clark, a graduate of Collaborative College for Technology and Leadership, Gabriel Luke Ivey, graduate of West Iredell High School and John Columbus Williams, a North Iredell alumnus, received their scholarship money at the most recent Kiwanis meeting.
The students are among 14 to receive $1,000 scholarships from the Statesville Kiwanis Club — thanks to proceeds from the Iredell County Agricultural Fair.
Eleven other students were presented their scholarships at the May meeting.
Scholarship co-chairman Joe Stephens said many factors go into choosing the recipients from the applications submitted each year. Grades are definitely one of the factors, Stephens said, but are not the only criteria for being selected.
“One thing we look at is community service,” he said, and that’s because the Kiwanis International Club is set up as a community service organization — to save the children of the world one child at a time.
And the Statesville Kiwanis Club gives scholarships to make a difference for the children of Iredell County.
He said the recipients this year represent every high school in the Iredell-Statesville School system except for Lake Norman. One college student also received a scholarship from the club.
Stephens said the amount of money available for scholarships each year is based on the success of the Iredell County Agricultural Fair.
“If it doesn’t rain for the fair and Jim (Head, fair manager) does a good job, we have $15,000, $16,000 to give away,” he said. “The only time we didn’t do scholarships was during COVID.”
In the past 24 years, the Kiwanis Club has presented more than $375,000 in scholarships to local students and distributed close to $1 million to area nonprofits — all proceeds from the fair.
Stephens and Club President Tammie Money said presenting these scholarships each year makes the hard work club members do staffing the nine days of the fair each year worthwhile. “This feels good to see where all our efforts go,” Stephens said at last month’s meeting.
