MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) -On Friday, the National Council of Meridianites Luncheon was hosted at the Hilton Garden Inn from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Two students were recipients of honorary scholarships, the Roots Scholarship and the Jacquelyn Sweetner Caffey Scholarship, which help students pay for their college tuition.
This group of wonderful people meets biennially to help encourage, fund and uplift the community’s youth. They look forward to furthering their education, whether in college or after graduation, and this group keeps up with the daily lives of past winners.
Winning this scholarship means you can do anything you want; you must never give up.
”You can do it. You know I’ve had my many doubts. But you can do it. Don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t. Don’t let anybody tell you that you shouldn’t. I think that. Do what? Do whatever makes you happy. Do whatever you feel comfortable with. Do whatever you know. Do whatever gives you joy and gives you fulfillment. And keep pushing. Whenever you think about giving up, fight even harder,” says KayDence Patton, recipient of the Roots Scholarship.
The Luncheon also included encouraging words from guest speaker Bobbie J. White from DeKalb, Mississippi, and remarks from foundation members.
”Is one way that we can give back and we can help our people and that then they finish their education and when they become working adults that they, too can reach back and give to young people who are facing the same situation, because that’s one of the things that I say that that which is why I am passionate about the scholarships because I know what having a scholarship did for me when I was coming through college. I know it’s still the same way,” says Alinda Rush Brown.
