Section V Athletics has announced scholarship recipients for the spring 2024 season.
As part of its mission to promote excellence in interscholastic athletics while supporting an education-based learning environment, Section V offers $500 scholarships for each sport each season to be used toward future academic endeavors. Winners are selected based on a letter of recommendation from their coach, their high school transcript and activities sheet, as well as their responses to application questions. There were 80 applications for this season’s scholarships, making it a very competitive selection process.
Among all the athletes and programs in Section V, Waterloo’s Hayden Linehan (baseball), Mynderse Academy’s Karter Ticconi (boys lacrosse), Canandaigua Academy’s Rose Heagney (girls lacrosse) and Wayne Central’s Evan Phillips (boys tennis) were the local recipients.
Here’s a closer look at each student-athlete:
Baseball: Hayden Linehan, Waterloo High SchoolLinehan has been playing on the varsity baseball team for the last four years. He also participates on the soccer team. Linehan shares that one of his favorite memories from participating in interscholastic athletics is “beating Geneva in sectionals last year and going out to eat afterward” with his teammates.
After high school, Linehan plans to study engineering at RIT. He states the one word that best describes him is “leader.”
Boys Lacrosse: Karter Ticconi, Mynderse AcademyTicconi has been playing lacrosse since he was 3 years old. While in high school, he also played on the soccer team. Ticconi shares that some of his favorite memories from participating in interscholastic athletics “always came from the more relaxed settings. I always loved to hang out with my teammates at team dinners and relax after practice. Although extremely uncomfortable and seemingly never-ending, I loved the bus rides as well. There was just something about talking to your teammates before a big game that will always hold a special place in my heart.”
After high school, Ticconi plans to attend the University of Miami to study business management with a minor in entrepreneurship. Upon completion of his degree, he plans to pursue a career in the real estate field. Karter states the one word that best describes him is “kind.”
Girls Lacrosse: Rose Heagney, Canandaigua AcademyHeagney has been playing lacrosse since she was in kindergarten — when the stick was taller than she was. She also participated on the alpine ski team, winning the 2022-23 Class A sectional title in the giant slalom with a time of 1:22.48.
After high school, Heagney plans to attend Niagara University to study nursing while playing Division I lacrosse for the Purple Eagles. Heagney shares that some of her favorite memories from participating in interscholastic athletics are all the little moments.
“I have been fortunate to have played with most of my teammates since we were in 1st or 2nd grade. Being part of a group of girls that support, laugh, lift you up and even cry with you has been amazing. I have also been lucky to have a coach that started from the beginning with us and has coached us in a variety of capacities throughout my career.”
Heagney states the one word that best describes her is “determined.”
Phillips has been playing tennis since he was 8 years old; playing competitively for the last six years. He was also on the volleyball and bowling teams while at Fairport.
Phillips shares that one of his favorite memories from participating in interscholastic athletics was “when I got to go to New York City for tennis team states. I walked the blocks with my friend, Jacob, and we got burgers at this super cool place called Burger Queen. It’s a simple thing but it was a surreal experience.”
After high school, Phillips plans to attend RIT to study mechatronics engineering. Evan states the one word that best describes him is “stubborn.”
Other winners of the scholarships were Pittsford-Mendon’s Matt Carpentier (boys golf), Perry High School’s Zachary Narowski (boys track and field), Oakfield-Alabama’s Angelina Luker (girls track and field) and Gates-Chili’s Alexa Ferrara (flag football).
