OSCODA – A sold out attendance of 150 gathered at the AuSable Inn Riverview Restaurant and Sports Bar on Oct. 9, for an evening of food, fashion and friendship, to raise money for college scholarships for local women.
Hosted by the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA), the annual event’s main focus was on raising scholarship money for college-bound women graduating from five area high schools – those being the Oscoda, Tawas, Hale, Whittemore-Prescott and Alcona districts.
The beautifully decorated restaurant, a delicious buffet and chances to win one of 42 gift baskets and raffle prizes, added to the enjoyment of seeing old friends and making new ones.
The highlight of the evening featured a fashion show of new styles for women and children, provided by local stores including O’Connor’s and B-Trendy of East Tawas, and The Tea Corner Emporium of Oscoda.
Additionally, theme-appropriate music by DJ Dave Carmona provided a truly immersive and delightful atmosphere for the audience.
Although many of the attendees were annual participants, some joined this year’s event for the first time.
Diane Atwater and Connie Koviack heard about the 2025 fashion show from Judy Kotarak, founder of the Northeast Sunrise Charter Chapter (SCC) ABWA.
Atwater saw the event as an opportunity to support scholarships for local women and local businesses.
Similarly, Koviack stated that her main reason for attending was because of the scholarships. “I would buy a ticket, even if I couldn’t go.”
According to Kotarak, the SCC awarded nine scholarships in 2025. These consisted of three, $1,000 scholarships through the Stephen Bufton Memorial Education Fund and six, $350 scholarships through the SCC’s Education Fund.
The 2025 fashion show is raising money for scholarships to be awarded in May 2026. Applications for the upcoming round of scholarships, will be available in January.
