An Academy High School senior was named a commended student through the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Katy Garmon earned the commended student recognition for placing among the top 4% of students across the country.
It is an annual academic competition among high school students that began in 1955.
“The program is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation — a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance,” the National Merit Scholarship Corporation said in a statement. “United States high school students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an initial screen of over 1.3 million entrants each year, and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements.”
“Throughout Katy’s high school years, she has consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence,” Amy Hodges, an Academy High School counselor, said. “Academy High School is excited for her to receive this honor and to see what the future holds for her, knowing that whatever path she chooses, she will undoubtedly continue to shine brightly.”
Although Garmon did not score high enough on the PSAT to continue in the National Merit Scholarship Program, she could be a candidate for special scholarships offered by more than 100 corporate sponsors that include BNSF Railway Foundation, The Boeing Company and Bridgestone Americas Trust Fund.
The National Merit Scholarship Program will notify Garmon and the other 34,000 candidates in November, 2025, if they are awarded a special scholarship.
Since its founding in 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Program has recognized more than 3.5 million students and provided approximately 470,000 scholarships — funding that totals more than $1.8 billion.
