FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WFFT) — For the third consecutive year, the Allen County Bar Foundation (ACBF) is uplifting aspiring legal professionals.
ACBF handed out two scholarships to students in the county’s legal community. La’Kendra Deitche and Lauren Monasa were named as the 2024 recipients and they’re already making strides in Allen County.
Deitche, a 2024 graduate from Indiana University Maurer School of Law, is a clerk for the Allen County Superior Court – Civil Division.
While in law school, the graduate was a member of the Student Diversity Advisory Board, served as the first Black president of the Public Interest Law Foundation, worked as a research assistant to the DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) director and founded the Disabled Law Students Association.
Prior to becoming a clerk in Allen County, Deitche interned with the Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, in Washington, D.C.
Her goal is to stay in Allen County and practice Civil Rights law. Eventually, she hopes to open a nonprofit in Fort Wayne with a focus on helping individuals from marginalized and historically excluded communities. These groups include Black and brown people, those with disabilities and the LGBTQIA+ community.
Monasa currently attends Indiana University Maurer School of Law. She has worked with District 10, a law practice providing free legal services to low-income individuals. Additionally, she worked with Indiana Legal Services.
The student is a member of OUTlaw, a campus club elevating LGBTQIA+ identities and allies.
Following graduation, the Allen County native plans to return to the area to live and work.
ACBF scholarships award recipients $3,000 toward tuition and fees or for bar exam preparations. To date, the organization has given away nearly $20,000. Their goal is to promote and advance DEI in Allen County’s legal community.
This year, scholarship contributions were made by Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP and Stewart Richardson Deposition Services.
