When one hears the word Sausagefest, exercise is not usually the first thing to come to mind. On Saturday, April 5, there were 78 brave souls who registered for the 5K, determined that few extra miles that morning might earn them a few extra samples that afternoon at the festivities in downtown Schulenburg.
Held in conjunction with the Sausagefest, the 5K was hosted by the Alliance for College & Career Student Success (ACCSS) which is a collaborative program involving Blinn College District and eight regional independent school districts. The original five that founded the partnership include Flatonia, Schulenburg, Weimar, Columbus and Fayetteville ISD’s. Now in their expansion phase, ACCSS has added Moulton, Dime Box and Sealy ISD’s.
Believing that rural youth deserve the opportunity to dream big and pursue their goals, the ACCSS program works to ensure that every student, regardless of background, has access to the opportunities needed to thrive in the pursuit of their educational and career aspirations by providing academic and career resources, guidance, and comprehensive support essential for students to attain post-secondary credits or workforce career credentials.
The overall winner and fastest male was Laine Brown who completed the 5K in 19:10.38. The fastest female was 10-year-old Emma Zweschper, who crossed the finish line in 24:20.141. The complete results and finish line pictures may be found at https:// sausagefest5k.itsyourrace. com/Results.aspx?id=16164 or on the ACCSS Facebook page @ACCSS5. The run was chip timed by Run Texas Timing Services and medals were distributed to the top three males and females in nine different age categories.
ACCSS is very grateful to the participants, run sponsors and to the Sausagefest committee for allowing them to host this event. The proceeds will help fund dual credit scholarships for ACCSS students in the Fall 2025 semester.
Next year’s run will be on April 11, 2026, a week later than the traditional first Saturday, due to the Easter holidays. For more information on ACCSS, contact Susie Shank, ACCSS Director, at (979) 743-5239.
