Each year, Aiken Electric Cooperative offers scholarships to deserving high school seniors to honor its two founding principles: concern for community and education.
The four-year and two-year Touchstone Energy and Trustee scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors planning to pursue higher education. Selection for these scholarships is competitive and based on academics, extracurricular activities, community involvement, self-analysis and an essay.
The $2,000 Trustee scholarship, personally funded by the Cooperative’s Trustees, was awarded to Jenasys Washington of Strom Thurmond High School. Washington plans to attend the College of Charleston to major in Environmental and Sustainability Studies.
Lawrence Valdez and Logan Valdez of Midland Valley High School were each awarded a $1,000 Touchstone Energy scholarship. Both Lawrence and Logan plan to attend Georgia Institute of Technology to study mechanical engineering in hopes of helping find solutions to shape the world better.
Kevin Hutto of Pelion High School also received a $1,000 two-year Touchstone Energy Scholarship. He plans to obtain his Associate in Applied Science from Midlands Technical College and accept an engineering position at Michelin or a similar company.
Applicants for the scholarship must reside in a residence served by Aiken Electric Cooperative. Details about the scholarships are publicized through South Carolina Living, social media and at aikenco-op.org.
Aiken Electric, a Touchstone Energy cooperative, is a not-for-profit, member-owned utility that provides reliable, competitively priced energy and other services desired by its members. The co-op serves more than 50,000 customers in a nine-county area.
