MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Freedom Preparatory Academy Charter Schools was awarded over a half-million dollars in scholarships by Alabama A&M University (AAMU).
AAMU gifted 14 scholarships to students totaling to $540,000 in efforts to bringing awareness and strengthening connections between Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and high schools.
“Freedom Prep is our first location in the Memphis, TN area for the Scholarship Recognition Bus Tour. We are hopeful that Freedom Prep High School will be the model and cornerstone location for AAMU to be recognized as the most desired HBCU for students living in the Memphis, TN area,” Dwayne Green, Director of Admissions for Alabama A&M.
HBCUs were created to provide higher education for Black people during the late 1800s when obtaining higher learning was a challenge.
HBCUs highlight Black excellence but welcomes students from all backgrounds and walks of life.
This event allowed students to gain knowledge about college and creating opportunities after graduating high school.
Alabama A&M gave students an experience with a performance by the AAMU Band and networking with AAMU student leaders and staff.
“This visit from Alabama A&M and the availability of scholarships can greatly impact students’ aspirations by showcasing tangible pathways to post-secondary education and highlighting the potential for academic and personal growth,” Roderick Barber, Head of School at Freedom Prep Academy at Brownlee High School, said in a statement.
