HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Registration for the 42nd Alabama State Games – June 13-15 & hosted by the City of Birmingham & Jefferson County – has seen an early surge, thanks partly to early bird pricing, but the clock is ticking. Discounted registration ends April 30, after which fees will increase on May 1. Athletes can view the full lineup of sports, venues, and registration details at ALAGAMES.com.
The 42nd Alabama State Games fall on Father’s Day Weekend. In addition to 27 sports on offer and the ASF Foundation awarding 34 scholarships totaling $42,000, adding to our total awarded to date of $416,000, Dads will be celebrated as part of the Opening Ceremony, June 13, inside Legacy Arena at the BJCC. The Honoring Our Heroes nominations aren’t just limited to biological dads. Athletes can nominate anyone who fills the father-figure role in their lives – be they actual parents, uncles, coaches, or father figures.

The June 13 Opening Ceremony events – GRIT101 for Teens (4:00 PM), State Farm Athlete Leadership Summit (5:00 PM) and the Opening Ceremony (7:00 PM) – are free and open to the public. “Fathers influence us in countless ways — through lessons learned on the field, road trips, and quiet moments after setbacks,” ASF Foundation Executive Director Laura Creel Burt said. “Their guidance creates a lasting impact.
This year, as we honor our heroes, dads are at the top of the list.” Created to honor 9/11 first responders and veterans, the Honoring Our Heroes program has expanded to recognize the lasting impact of law enforcement, emergency personnel, nurses, educators, and now, the fathers whose quiet wisdom shapes future generations.
“I’ve competed in the Alabama State Games for the past four years, and I love it,” said Josie Harrison of Sylacauga, the 2024 Youth Female Athlete of the Year. “It’s special because it offers athletes incredible opportunities – from winning gold, silver, and bronze medals, just like the Olympics, to competing for scholarships.
It’s a remarkable platform to showcase your skills against top talent from across the state.”
