ALAMOSA — At the Alamosa County Board of County Commissioners meeting on May 22, commissioners celebrated several Valley students.
“Alamosa County is proud to present our first recipients of the Alamosa County Bright Future Scholarship,” county officials stated.
Kayleigh Garcia and Joaquin Salinas received the scholarship.
The $1,000 scholarship was open to high school seniors and college students who are currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution and have a family member employed with Alamosa County.
This is the first year the scholarship was awarded, but the county plans on continuing with it every year, according to County Commissioner Lori Laske.
Garcia will graduate from Monte Vista High School with a 4.067 GPA. She is a member of the National Honor Society, was highly involved in extracurricular activities throughout high school and served the community with a large amount of community service hours. She is interested in becoming an ultrasound technician.
Salinas is a freshman at the University of Colorado Boulder and is pursuing a bachelor’s in media production. He graduated from Adams State University with his associate’s degree while in high school and is a member of the National Honor Society. He has earned a place on the Dean’s list both semesters while at CU and is interested in becoming a director or a screenwriter.
