ALLIANCE ‒ A recent Alliance High School graduate was awarded an Athena Scholarship from the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce.
Avery Horning, the daughter of Matthew and Candice Horning, received the $1,000 award at the chamber’s annual meeting May 20 at Alliance Country Club.
More than 120 people attended the event which included live music from Minerva musician Lucas Nigro.
The scholarship is given annually to a female high school senior who demonstrates academic achievement, a deep commitment to community service and leadership potential, according to chamber officials.
Horning will attend Spring Arbor University in Spring Arbor, Michigan, in the fall. She will play soccer for the Cougars and plans to major in exercise science.
Horning wrestled and was All-Ohio for Division III in soccer at Alliance High. She was named the SARTA Athlete of the Week for Dec. 22-28, 2024.
