Alworth Scholarship application opens under new director, an alumni scholar herself – messagemedia.co

The Marshall H. & Nellie Alworth Memorial Fund officially opened the annual Alworth Scholarship application on Nov. 1 for high school seniors or students with an approved home school curriculum, pursuing a four-year degree in math, science, engineering or medicine.
The scholarship is $24,000 per student and last year 91 students received the award. Breanne Tepler, new executive director and lifelong Duluthian, is an alumnus of a similar local scholarship. “Scholarships like the Alworth are transformational. My academic and professional career started with a scholarship just like this and it opened doors I never would’ve been able to walk through. It has been rewarding to now share my story as a teen mom, first generation college student and alumni scholar, to inspire a new generation of students as they explore their academic and career dreams,” Tepler shared.
The Alworth Scholarship is open to applicants from one of the following Minnesota counties: Aitkin, Beltrami, Carlton, Cass, Cook, Crow Wing, Itasca, Koochiching and St. Louis which host more than 60 high schools. Students should review all of the eligibility and application requirements on the website www.alworthscholarship.org and direct questions to alworth@alworthscholarship.org. The application deadline is Jan. 15. “We are very fortunate in our community to have access to many local and regional scholarships. This is not typical in every state. Our students have an abundance of opportunity to help pay for college and they can start exploring those opportunities by talking with their guidance counselors or reaching out to us at the Alworth Memorial Fund,” Tepler added.
Tepler has been traveling to area high schools to talk about the Alworth Scholarship and includes information about career exploration. “I taught a Career Exploration and Planning course for 9 years and I love helping young people navigate what’s next after high school. Having a plan, and being able to articulate it in an essay, helps students stand out in the scholarship application process.”
Since 1949, the Alworth Memorial Fund has granted scholarships that support students going into a math, science, engineering, or medicine related field with high scholastic records and financial need in the Alworth Memorial Fund region. The Fund has awarded thousands of scholarships, amounting to more than $60 million after the recent 2025 scholarship award year.
