American Airlines is actively assisting students in bridging the gap between classrooms and hangars by granting recent scholarship awards. During events last week, the airline presented eight scholarships to students, thereby supporting their aspirations to become aviation maintenance technicians.
“Supporting and mentoring the next generation of aviation maintenance technicians is not only our honor, but our duty,” said Evie Garces, Vice President of Line Maintenance at American Airlines. “These scholarships not only provide access to educational opportunities, but they also open doors to lucrative careers. We’re proud to care for these talented students on their educational journeys and hope to see them in an American uniform after graduation.”
During a ceremony at the Chicago campus of the Aviation Maintenance Institute (AIM), an airline granted six scholarships worth $1,000 each to students enrolled in the Aviation Maintenance Technician program:
In 2022, American Airlines established a partnership with AIM in Chicago, offering students opportunities to engage with the airline’s maintenance facilities and professionals. Over the past two years, aviation maintenance technicians from American’s Chicago hub at ORD have mentored student teams from AIM for the Aerospace Maintenance Council Competition (AMC), which took place this year in Chicago alongside Aviation Week’s MRO Americas conference.
At the AMC awards ceremony, American Airlines also granted scholarships to two brothers attending the Puerto Rico Aviation Maintenance Institute in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. Julio and Edgardo Sanchez Casillas from Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, each received $2,500 Phoebe Omlie scholarships, named after the first female aircraft mechanic license holder. Both Julio and Edgardo are enrolled in the aviation maintenance program at the institute.
