TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Riley Theroes, a rising senior at Mount Marty University in Yankton, is one of four medical laboratory science students nationwide awarded a $5,000 scholarship by the American Proficiency Institute (API).
“API has awarded nearly $200,000 in scholarships to medical laboratory students over the years,” explained Sue Harmer, API President. “The passion and caliber of students committed to the profession continues to impress.”
“My mother passed away in an accident the day of my high school graduation,” said Theroes, a Wisner, Nebraska, native. “I was in the darkest moment of my life when I began working as a laboratory intern. Despite the fact that the lab had no windows, it gave me the brightest future. Helping others, even if it’s from a background role, is what I want to do. I want to be a medical laboratory scientist for that lab, myself, and my mom.”
“Riley seems to take naturally to the laboratory world,” explained Kay Rasmussen, EdD, MS, MLS(ASCP)CM, assistant professor, Department of Biology at Mount Marty University. “If she were to be analyzing any of my samples, I know I would trust her completely.”
“API is proud to continue its tradition to supporting the next generation of medical laboratory scientists,” said Harmer.
The American Proficiency Institute is one of the largest proficiency testing providers in the world, serving over 20,000 laboratories. API offers innovative solutions and technical excellence for the proficiency testing needs of hospital and reference laboratories, physician offices, clinics, and point-of-care testing sites.
