Representatives from AMVETS Post 270 in McLean County presented the Heartland Community College Foundation with funding for an endowed scholarship to help nursing students.
The Vivian O. Stockdale Nursing Scholarship was created in honor of a former Post 270 commander who served as a nurse in World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Vivian Stockdale was part of the WAVES program (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), which began in World War II to allow women to serve in non-combat roles. In 1948, the WAVES were integrated into the regular U.S. Navy, allowing women to serve on a permanent, regular basis.
Stockdale completed her service in the Navy with a rank of petty officer, second class. Beyond her military service, Stockdale was committed to serving her community, working to reduce nursing shortages and volunteering for American Red Cross blood drives.
