MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – For Jorden Wilson, today is a bittersweet day. The Angel Mothers United organization presented him with a $500 scholarship for his academic efforts. But he was presented the check without his brother Kamden who died in 2017.
The Blount High School senior says he was excited when his name was called.
“I knew it had to be when I saw my mom go up there. I was like ‘Ah here we go’. But then when I heard my name, I was like ‘oh, okay’.” Wilson said.
His mother Jasmyn Johnson is the Vice President of the Angel Mothers United organization. Making this even more important for her.
“Our organization is based on mothers who have lost children due to homicide. So to be able to award that scholarship today to my son in the absence of his brother, it just meant everything,” Johnson said.
And for her, it’s hard to hide the emotions. But even as she remembers one son, she’s also proud of the other.
“It’s a little cherry on top of an actual bittersweet moment. I can’t help but think about that I’m actually supposed to have two opportunities to do this, and now I’m only going to have one chance. So, I’m trying to push behind him as much as I can to make the most out of this experience,” Johnson said.
And Jorden will attend bishop state before going to UAB where he’ll major in mass communications.
His mother hopes to continue this tradition for years to come.
