SPARTANSBURG — The 10th annual Run for Rick, overseen by Kyle Jewell and his mother Chris Jewell, took place on Oct. 26 along the scenic East Branch Trail in Spartansburg. The event, traditionally held on the last Saturday of October to coincide with Rick and Chris Jewell’s wedding anniversary, enjoyed favorable weather conditions this year.
The 5K run/walk, established to honor the memory of Rick Jewell who passed away in November 2004, successfully raised $2,200 for vocational student scholarships. Participants received commemorative T-shirts and enjoyed a post-race picnic lunch.
Tyler Slaney claimed first place overall with an impressive time of 16:31. Slaney, who competed in this year’s Pittsburgh Marathon, is preparing for the Boston Marathon in April 2025. Kim Turner led the women’s division with a time of 21:45.
Notable age group victories in the men’s division included Jeb Turner (19 and under, 20:37), Seth Brown (30-39, 28:13), Troy Turner (40-49, 20:53), Ron Kristen (60-69, 27:26), Rod Brest (70-79, 25:14) and Bill Burdette (80 and up, 48:20).
In the women’s categories, standout performances came from Everly Brown (19 and under, 37:45), Lindsey Halfast (20-29, 44:35), Samantha Savitz (30-39, 28:00), Kim Turner (40-49, 21:45), Shirley Hicks (50-59, 49:47), Liz Firth (60-69, 55:18) and Kathy Greer (70-79, 43:09).
The event continues to serve as a touching tribute to Rick Jewell’s legacy while supporting future vocational students through scholarship opportunities.
