Anonymous UMHB donation establishes special education scholarship in College of Education in Belton – The Killeen Daily Herald

BELTON — University of Mary Hardin-Baylor officials announced the school received a $1 million gift, and they are putting it toward a good cause.
The donor wished to remain anonymous, according to a news release. The gift was made to establish the Marek-Smith Special Education Endowed Scholarship, which will support UMHB students working toward a bachelor of science in education who are seeking special education certification.
“We are so grateful for the generosity of these incredible friends of the university,” President Randy O’Rear stated. “Their investment will impact the lives of UMHB students for years to come as they pursue their calling to educate children with special needs. I can’t think of a more deserving career to invest in.
“The world needs Christ-centered, servant-hearted educators to shape the future, and this scholarship will open doors for our students who feel God has called them to work in special education.”
The Marek-Smith Center for Teacher Preparation opened in spring 2024. It features classrooms equipped with “cutting-edge” technology, resources, equipment and tools for training special education teachers, the news release stated.
“No other profession impacts the future the way an educator does,” Dean of College of Education Craig Hammonds stated. “Each year, UMHB is blessed to graduate some of the brightest, hardest-working young educators in the field. Endowed scholarships like this help to ensure the future of education is strong. The College of Education couldn’t be more grateful.”
