Applications are currently being accepted for the 2025 Maggie J. Bryant Scholarship Fund.
The purpose of the scholarship fund is to “provide money to a deserving high school senior or college freshman in good academic standing who values continuous learning and has demonstrated a commitment to improving their community.” Students applying for the scholarship must have a primary residence in Pike, Crenshaw or Covington County. Applications will be accepted until June 30 and winners will be announced by July 31.
The scholarship fund was established in 2020 to honor the life and legacy of Maggie J. Bryant, whose commitment to her family, community and continuous learning was not hindered by her physical hearing limitations. Bryant was a nurses’ aide by education but a self-taught religious scholar, as well. She was considered a pillar of her community and throughout her life demonstrated the importance of giving her time to worthy causes and providing spiritual guidance to all who were willing to listen and learn.
Bryant served for decades at the highest level of several religious organizations and was a highly sought-out speaker at church and community events. The annual scholarship was established by her family to celebrate her life by helping deserving college-aged students fulfill their educational goals, establish a lifelong learning mindset and strive to lead by example as Bryant did.
Up to two undergraduate scholarship awards are available for up to $1,500 annually. The number and dollar amount of awards will be determined by the selection committee based on the funds available at the time of the recipient selection. Awards are for one year only, but recipients may re-apply for a second year. Awards will not be given to the same recipient more than once. All scholarship awards will be paid directly to the recipients once college enrollment is verified. The committee reserves the right not to award a scholarship in a given year.
